Green Army Teams Glimpse Landcare Future at State NRM Conference

3 September 2015

Eighteen young people working in two Green Army teams in the Peel-Harvey catchment will have the opportunity to attend the State NRM Conference over two days in late September, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the event’s organising body.

The State NRM Conference is being held at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre from 21-23 September and has attracted a major line up of landcare practitioners including keynote speaker Dr Carmen Lawrence.

State NRM Office director John Holley said the decision to offer the Green Army participants the chance to attend the event was an investment in future Landcare.

“These young people are undertaking the six-month programme because they are interested in gaining practical training and experience while being paid to work in local environments restoring native vegetation, protecting animal habitats and regenerating wetlands. By offering them a chance to become delegates at the conference, we hope to grow their passion for NRM and inspire them to continue in landcare careers,” said John Holley.

The national Green Army programme offers young people skills, training and experience to improve their future career prospects. A Green Army team of ten from the Harvey River Restoration Taskforce, together with a Green Army team of eight from the City of Mandurah will both have the chance to attend the event over two consecutive days.

Harvey River Restoration Taskforce Rivercare Officer Jane Townsend said it would be very beneficial for the Green Army teams to take part in the conference.

“By attending the event, they will become more aware of the many opportunities for career paths in all the varied aspects of NRM practice and it will inspire them even further into potential landcare and natural resource management careers,” said Jane Townsend.

The Harvey River and City of Mandurah projects are supported by the Australian Government’s Green Army Programme and the Peel Harvey Catchment Council.
